What is Smart Trail?

SmartTrail is AllTerrain Uk's bespoke green laning planning tool, provided as a member benefit to paid up members of All Terrain UK.

SmartTrail provides a national view (prediminatly England and Wales) of all Public Rights of Way with vehicular rights.

The system is designed to provide a consistent view of those lanes that are driveable, not driveable and those with seasonal or other restrictions . It also provides a platform via which users can share information about the lanes by leaving user comments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SmartTrail an App? Expand

SmartTrail is a web based application, we recommend you use Google Chrome for the best browsing experience.

It's designed as a research and planning tool, NOT a navigation tool. its should be used to pin your routes first and use a navigation tool such as Memory Map, Outdoor Active, OS Maps app (this list is not exhaustive) to follow your planned route.

Can I use SmartTrail to track a route? Expand

SmartTrail is intended to be a route planning tool, there are existing mobile apps for following a route such as ViewRanger, OS Maps, Memory maps etc.

How do I know what lanes I can drive on SmartTrail? Expand

SmartTrail uses a traffic light system to identify whether you can legally drive the track. The same colours are used for byways and unclassified roads.

Green - Legal to drive

Orange - Restrictions

Red - Restricted/ Closed

How do I get access to SmartTrail? Expand

SmartTrail is a benefit of membership to All Terrain UK. You can join here: https://allterrainuk.com/join-us/

How up-to-date is SmartTrail? Expand

With our network of representatives across the country and our close collaboration with councils we aim to have the most accurate data. We would recommend checking for signage or gates when using green lanes just in case we haven't been notified of a closure. We would recommend verifying the legal status of any green lane with the local councils definitive map.

See what our members and Smart Trail users have to say:

I have Smart Trail on my Phone, PC, Tablet, I have used many other paid maps on the market, but I have to say All Terrain's SmartTrail is the easiest to use by far, I recommend to all my members in my club they use All Terrain UK.

Charlie James (Hampshire)

Smart Trail User

I've used smart trail a few times I find it very easy to navigate and use the traffic light system is excellent in working out what is legal to drive and what is not, as said before other members are more than happy to help if you need it.

Paul Turrell (Norfolk)

Smart Trail User

I always use ST for planning purposes now - thankfully ATUK also provided me with a walkthrough mapping session where I was able to also interact with something like viewranger to help with navigation when out and about. Watching the forums and other media the updates are regular and the encouragement for user evidence supportive too.
