Decoding Green Laning: Essential Terms Every Enthusiast Should Know

March 9, 2024 by ATUK

Embarking on a green laning adventure is more than just navigating unsurfaced tracks; it’s about immersing yourself in a community rich with tradition, respect for the countryside, and a shared language. Whether you’re a seasoned laner or new to the trail, understanding the terminology is key to a safe and enjoyable experience. Here’s a guide to some essential green laning terms:

1. Green Lane

An ancient road that didn’t get surfaced with tarmac during the 1920s and 30s when the UK’s road system was improved.

2. Byway Open to All Traffic (BOAT)

A public right of way legally open to all users, including motor vehicles. These routes are often unsurfaced and are a primary choice for green laners.

3. Unclassified County Road (UCR)

Minor public roads maintained by local authorities. Their legal status for vehicular access can vary, so it’s essential to verify before driving.

4. Traffic Regulation Order (TRO)

A legal order restricting or prohibiting the use of a road or path by certain vehicles or users. TROs can be temporary or permanent and are crucial for preserving the condition of routes and safety of users.

5. Off-Piste

Not sticking to the defined track; venturing off the legal route. This practice is discouraged as it can cause environmental damage and lead to legal issues.

6. Lane Clearance

The act of removing obstructions or overgrowth from a green lane to keep it passable for all users. This is often done by volunteers and local groups committed to preserving access.

7. Winching

Using a motor-driven device to pull a vehicle out of difficult terrain. While essential for recovery, it’s advised not to venture out with the intention of using your winch; it should be a last resort.

8. Abatement

The legal right to remove an obstruction from a public right of way. However, this should be done within one’s capabilities and with appropriate tools, ensuring not to cause further damage.

9. Smart Trail

All Terrain UK’s exclusive interactive green lane mapping database. Available to members, it assists in researching routes, verifying legal statuses, and sharing information on lane conditions.

10. Code of Conduct

A set of guidelines promoting responsible and sustainable green laning. Adhering to the code ensures minimal impact on the environment and maintains good relations with other countryside users.

Understanding and using this terminology not only enhances your green laning experience but also contributes to the preservation and respect of these cherished routes. At All Terrain UK, we’re dedicated to promoting responsible, sustainable, and enjoyable green laning.
