What’s Your Why? The Heart Behind Every Green Laner

October 21, 2025 by Josh Railton

What’s Your Why? The Heart Behind Every Green Laner

At All Terrain UK, we talk a lot about how we drive — slowly, responsibly, respectfully — and where we drive — legal green lanes, byways and unsurfaced roads across the countryside.

But today, we want to talk about something deeper.
We want to ask:

What’s your why?

Why do you pack your kit, air down your tyres, and head out into the wild?
Why do you give up a weekend for a muddy trail or a windswept ridgeline?
Why do you care about protecting access, respecting the land, and doing things the right way?

Green Laning Is More Than Just a Drive

Sure, we love the vehicles — the classics, the modified beasts, the daily drivers doing something a little different. But green laning is never just about the wheels.

It’s about something more. Something personal.

For some of us, it’s the peace.
For others, it’s the people.
For many, it’s the sense of purpose — exploring without damaging, connecting without consuming, and driving without dominating.

So, what’s your why?

Is It the Escape?

Maybe you find freedom in the slow pace of a country lane.
No traffic. No noise. No pressure.

Just you, your vehicle, and the quiet rhythm of the countryside.
A chance to unplug, reset, and breathe in air that smells like trees and wet leaves instead of fumes and deadlines.

Is It the Connection?

Maybe it’s the friendships. The convoy chat. The nod from a stranger on the trail who just “gets it”.
Maybe it’s building confidence — in your driving, your decisions, or your ability to help others when they’re stuck (or lost!).

Community is everything at All Terrain UK — and that shared purpose is something powerful.

Is It the Challenge?

Technical trails. Muddy climbs. Water crossings. Navigation.
Green laning offers a real sense of adventure, but it rewards patience over power, and calm over chaos.

It’s not a race. It’s not a spectacle. It’s a puzzle.
And every time you drive it right, you earn something more valuable than bragging rights — you earn respect.

Is It the Responsibility?

For some of us, why we do this is closely tied to how we do this.
Because we know green laning is a privilege — and we want to protect it.

We do it to set an example.
To drive with purpose.
To show landowners, councils and the public that we are not the problem — we’re part of the solution.

We’re building a future where this hobby can thrive without harming the places we love.

So, What’s Your Why?

We’d love to hear it.

Whether you’ve been laning for 20 years or just took your first trip — your story matters. Share it in the comments below, post it on facebook group, or tag us on social using #MyGreenLaningWhy.

Let’s celebrate what connects us — not just the vehicles, but the values.

Need a Little Help Finding Your Why?

It’s Not What You Drive — It’s How You Drive It

October 20, 2025 by Josh Railton

It’s Not What You Drive — It’s How You Drive It

There’s a myth that only certain vehicles belong on the lanes. That green laning is just for lifted rigs, mud-plugging monsters or heavily kitted-out trucks.

But at All Terrain UK, we know the truth:

It doesn’t matter what you drive — it’s how you drive it.

Whether you’re in a showroom-fresh Defender, a rusty Jimny, a trusty Freelander, or a beloved Series II, the most important thing you bring to the lanes is your attitude.

Respect, Not Horsepower

We’ve seen it all on the trails:

  • Polished classics gliding quietly through woodland routes
  • Older 4x4s chugging steadily up rocky climbs
  • Stock SUVs enjoying their first green lane trip

And every single one of them belongs — as long as they’re being driven with care, respect and responsibility.

Because green laning isn’t motorsport. It’s not about pushing limits or “showing off”. It’s about enjoying the countryside in a way that keeps it open, healthy and shared for future generations.

Responsibility Is the Real Requirement

Green laning access in the UK is fragile. It exists thanks to legal classifications, historical rights of way, and ongoing relationships with landowners, councils and other countryside users. That access can be lost — and has been — due to careless behaviour.

What matters most is not what badge is on your bonnet, but whether you’re:

✅ Driving at the right speed
✅ Staying on the legal route
✅ Avoiding damage to the surface or surroundings
✅ Being courteous to walkers, riders, cyclists and locals
✅ Leaving gates, livestock and the land exactly as you found it
✅ Avoiding loud pipes, reckless driving or convoy chaos
✅ Willing to step out, check obstacles, and put safety first

If you’re doing all of that — you belong on the lanes.

Green Laning Is for Everyone — But It’s Earned

At All Terrain UK, we believe in community-led responsibility. That means helping new drivers learn the ropes, promoting sustainable vehicle use, and holding each other to high standards — no matter the age, style, or spec of the vehicle.

We don’t gatekeep. We educate.
We don’t shame. We support.
We don’t take. We give back.

And we do it together — through events, workshops, trail days, and our shared code of conduct.

Old, New, Classic — All Welcome

Here’s the beauty of the green lane community: it’s full of variety.

  • That 20-year-old Discovery with mismatched panels? It’s seen more trails than some new builds ever will.
  • That near-pristine G-Wagen? If it’s being driven respectfully, it’s just as valid.
  • That classic Land Rover Series III, lovingly kept alive? It’s a rolling part of history — and belongs out there just as much as anyone.

We all have something to contribute — but we all have something to protect, too.

Let’s Keep the Lanes Open — Together

By focusing on how we drive, not what we drive, we protect everything that makes green laning special:

  • Access to legal trails and byways
  • Wildlife and habitat preservation
  • Landowner and council cooperation
  • Our reputation as a community
  • The safety of everyone on the lanes

So whether you’re a first-time explorer or a long-time laner — welcome. Just bring the right attitude, a respect for the trail, and a commitment to doing things the right way.

Why Tyre Tread Matters for Green Laning (and Every Road Trip)

October 19, 2025 by Josh Railton

Tyre Tread: The Unsung Hero of Safe Green Laning

At All Terrain UK, we’re all about enjoying the countryside responsibly. From respecting seasonal closures to working alongside landowners, our ethos is clear: take only memories, leave only tracks — and even then, leave as little trace as possible.

One of the simplest ways to honour that responsibility? Check your tyre tread.

Tyre tread isn’t just a legal tick-box. It’s a safety essential, a lane-preservation tool, and a key part of how we stay welcome on the routes we all enjoy.

What Is Tyre Tread and Why Does It Matter?

Your tyre tread is the patterned rubber surface that contacts the ground. It’s designed to:

  • Disperse water, helping you avoid aquaplaning
  • Maintain traction on slippery or loose surfaces
  • Ensure control when braking, steering, or climbing uneven terrain
  • Prevent damage to fragile lanes by reducing wheelspin and skidding

On metalled roads or muddy trails, worn tread equals less grip and longer stopping distances — not a risk worth taking, especially when exploring remote green lanes.

UK Tyre Law: Know Your Limit

In the UK, the legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread around the entire circumference.

But here’s the thing — performance starts dropping well before that.

Most tyre specialists (and we agree) recommend replacing your tyres at 3 mm to maintain braking efficiency and safe handling — particularly in wet or uneven conditions. If you’re heading into winter or planning a big trail day, don’t wait for the legal limit.

Green Laning Adds Extra Pressure

Let’s be honest — green laning can be demanding on your tyres. Loose stone, wet grass, mud, ruts, and inclines all make grip a priority.

Poor tread isn’t just a risk to your vehicle — it’s a risk to the lane itself. Wheelspin, uncontrolled sliding, and recovery vehicles all cause damage that can put lanes at risk of closure. Driving with good tyres isn’t just safer — it’s more respectful to the land and its custodians.

We’ve seen first-hand how responsible driving keeps access open — and how careless damage can spark restrictions. Don’t be that driver.

How to Check Your Tyre Tread (It’s Easy!)

You don’t need a garage or special tools — just a few minutes and a 20p coin.

🔍 The 20p Test

Place a 20p coin into the tread groove. If the outer rim is visible, your tread is below 3 mm — time to think about replacement.

🔍 Use Wear Indicators

Most tyres have raised tread bars built in. If your tread is level with them, it’s at or near the legal limit.

🔍 Visual Inspection

Look for cuts, cracks, bulges, or uneven wear. Even with legal tread depth, these can make a tyre unsafe — especially off the tarmac.

🔍 Check All Four

Tyres wear unevenly depending on your vehicle setup. Always check front, rear, inner and outer edges.

When Should I Replace My Tyres?

Replace them before they reach 1.6 mm — ideally at 2–3 mm, especially if:

  • You regularly drive on green lanes or rural tracks
  • You’re heading into wetter, colder weather
  • Your tyres are more than 5 years old (rubber ages!)
  • You notice vibration, poor handling, or irregular wear

If you’re unsure, get them checked professionally — especially before a club run or remote route.

Part of a Bigger Picture

Checking your tyres isn’t just good vehicle maintenance — it’s part of our wider commitment at All Terrain UK:

  • Safety for you, your passengers, and others
  • Sustainability, by reducing trail erosion and environmental impact
  • Preservation of access, through demonstrating responsibility to councils and landowners
  • Community leadership, by setting the standard for how green laning should be done

We’re proud to stand for more than just adventure — we stand for accountable, community-first exploration.

Introducing the Smart Trail App: Green Laning Made Smarter

October 18, 2025 by Josh Railton

Hello ATUK community!

We’re absolutely thrilled to announce a big step forward for our green‑laning friends: the Smart Trail app is here (kind of)! 🚀

Yes — we actually made an app. No, we still can’t quite believe it either. 😅

Our band of volunteers have been quietly tinkering behind the scenes so we can bring you something genuinely handy — the Smart Trail app, designed to help you find lanes, plot routes, and create GPX files with ease.

Here’s the honest low‑down:

  • 📱 Android only (for now): Sorry Apple fans! We are working on an iOS version and hope to roll it out early next year.
  • 🛠️ Very early days: Expect a few bumps and ruts while we smooth things out.
  • 🗺️ Works online only: It needs a signal to do its magic (this means a mobile or WiFi connection).
  • 💚 Free to download, but login required: The Smart Trail app is free to install, but to log in and use it you’ll need to be a paid member of All Terrain UK.

Why did we build it? Because our mission is to make green laning smarter, safer and more sustainable — and this app helps bring that mission into your vehicle or on your mobile:

  • View and search lanes across England & Wales. (Mapping currently covers England & Wales.)
  • See live lane status and access restrictions.
  • Plot and save GPX routes for your next adventure.
  • Open directions in Google Maps or what3words.
  • Ad‑free and full‑screen map experience.

We built it because we believe that green laning isn’t just a hobby — it’s a community, a way to enjoy the countryside responsibly, to work with landowners and local councils, and to share in the adventure with friends. The Smart Trail app is another tool to help you, as a member, get more out of your membership, explore more safely, and respect the lanes we love.

How you can help
Since we’re in version 1.0, your feedback matters. If you spot a bug, a mapping issue, or have suggestions for features you’d love to see — please let us know. We’re powered mostly by biscuits, determination and volunteer time!

👉 Download the app now on Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.allterrainuk.smarttrail
📣 Let us know what you think — join the conversation on our forums or social pages.

What’s next?

  • An iOS version is in the pipeline — we’ll keep you posted when it’s ready.
  • Offline map support? We hope so. But we need your feedback and a little more time.
  • More lane‑data, enhancements and cool features as we grow the app.

Thank you for being part of this community. Together we’re making green laning smarter, safer and more sustainable. Let’s keep exploring, respecting the land, and enjoying the journey. 🌿💪

See you on the trails!
