Green laning is more than just mud, engines, and epic views β itβs about preserving access to some of the UKβs most beautiful places. πΏ
Thatβs why at All Terrain UK, we live by a Green Laning Code of Conduct β a set of principles that helps protect the trails, the land, and the reputation of our community.
Hereβs what every green laner should follow.
π§ 1. Only Use Legal Routes
Sounds obvious β but itβs crucial. If youβre not 100% sure a lane is legal for motor vehicles, donβt drive it.
β Stick to:
- Byways Open to All Traffic (BOATs)
- Unclassified County Roads (UCRs)
- Permissive routes with clear vehicle access
β Avoid:
- Footpaths
- Bridleways
- Restricted byways
- Private land without permission
Our members get access to verified maps, local insights, and updates on route closures to help avoid costly mistakes.
π 2. Respect the Countryside and Its People
You’re a guest in someone else’s backyard. Be mindful of:
- Farm animals and wildlife β slow down and give them space
- Farmers and landowners β always be polite and courteous
- Walkers, cyclists and horse riders β pass carefully, slowly, and with a smile
If someoneβs not happy to see you, donβt escalate β educate, if you can, or move on respectfully.
π 3. Drive With Care and Skill
Green laning isnβt a race β itβs about exploring safely and responsibly.
- Keep speeds low (5β15 mph is plenty)
- Avoid spinning wheels or churning up muddy sections
- Donβt attempt routes beyond your skill level or vehicle capabilities
- Use recovery gear properly and only when necessary
A bit of prep goes a long way β and helps protect the lanes for everyone.
π― 4. Leave No Trace
Take only photos, leave only tyre tracks β and even then, try to keep those light.
- Take litter home
- Avoid creating new tracks or widening the trail
- Donβt drive on overly wet or damaged routes β it can cause long-term harm
- If you open a gate, close it behind you
Good green laners make it look like we were never there. Thatβs the goal.
π€ 5. Be Part of the Solution
At All Terrain UK, we actively work with councils, landowners, and environmental groups to keep lanes open and access fair for all.
You can help by:
- Reporting blocked or damaged lanes
- Volunteering on lane maintenance days
- Educating new green laners on responsible use
- Sharing positive stories from your adventures
The stronger our community, the better our chances of protecting these trails for the next generation.
π Green Laning Done Right
When we all follow the code, we protect our access, improve our image, and build lasting friendships along the way.
